Digital Video Formats - Codecs Compression and CCTV Video

Digital video has various formats and it is a very useful tool. It is mostly overlooked. Businesses can gain a lot by applying it to internet market (it is to promote, sell and distribute goods and services all day long on the internet). A well-designed site that implements the digital video tool is the best way to sell and stay ahead in a worldwide market where transactions are made 24/7. It has also been involved in a lot of legal cases around the globe. This article is mainly to help you understand the many formats of digital video and its relation to CCTV (closed circuit television systems).

Basically, in layman's term, digital video is defined as a video which has been recorded with a software program and is stored digitally on a computer. A CCTV is a computer system. The information digitalized can be accessed from a computer and directly displayed on a computer screen Listed below are some formats of the digital video file. All formats mentioned here are based on Pulse-Code Modulation (PCM). Pulse-Code Modulation is a representation of an analog signal digitally in which the size of the signal is tested frequently at uniform intervals. The signals are then interpreted to a collection of symbols in number form (most times, in binary code). For you to better understand how this works, highlighted below is a catalog of the types of digital video types.

CCIR 601 (also RE 601)

CCIR 601 is a file that has digital and analog television conversion and due to this feature, it is used for broadcasting television channels. Interlaced analog video signals are converted into digital videos by this file format of digital video.

This digital video file format converts and encodes interlaced analog video signals into digital video. TV commercials were distributed on analog first then digital tape in the old days. Nowadays, wireless networks can be used to distribute television commercials by electronic

means using digital video technology. Some services example of which is SpotMixer enables businesses to create and design their own commercials online and they can also distribute them across various media which includes television and the internet.

MPEG-4

MPEG-4 is ideal to use if videos with large size and those recorded to flash memory are to be distributed online. It is the digital format used to upload to YouTube as well as other social media networks. It is also used for video iPods.

MPEG-2

DVDs are made using MPEG-2 digital file format. A DVD player will play a MPEG-2 video file burned onto a DVD disk. A computer that is compatible with DVDs can also play MPEG-2 file burned onto a DVD. However, there will be difficulty when trying to use a computer with older DVD technology to read a DVD burned with newer technology.

MPEG-1

MPEG-1 is the first digital video format to be produced in large quantity and it is used for video Compact Disks (CDs). It is no longer in use nowadays but it pops up occasionally. Most DVD players will open MPEG-1 files but some players cannot read this file format.

H.261

This is the first digital video coding standard that is truly practical. In fact, the H.261 design serves as the basis for other subsequent encodings which includes H.262, H.263, H.264, MPEG-1, MPEG-1, and MPEG-4. It is rarely in use today.

H.263
It is a digital video codec standard designed initially for video-conferencing because it has been compressed into a low-bit-rate format. H.263 has since been applied in many ways on the internet.
Most Flash Video (as applied on sites like Google Video, YouTube, MySpace, Textnow, etc.) contents are encoded using this format.
The first version of Real Video was derived from H.263 until the upgrade, Real Video 8, was released. I will, however, advise you not to use the first version of Real video.

H.264
H.264 is also called AVC or MPEG-4 part 10. It is the next in the series of enhanced codec designed for sharing a digital video on the web. H.264 is an upgrade to H.263 and it is a significant improvement in terms of capability. The H.263 is referred to now as a legacy design.

Nowadays, almost all new video-conferencing products have H.264 and also H.261 and H.261 capabilities.
The bottom line is, by using digital video converters and video editing software, the files above can be viewed since they are made using computers which include CCTV systems.

To create a complete Flash video, there is more to it than just the video file even though many video editing software programs like Vegas, Final Cut, and Premiere can be used to export finalized video productions in Flash video.
To post a Flash Video on a website, the following components are needed apart from the .FLV file.

1.    The .html component - the HTML page that loads the Flash video player.
2.    The .flv component – the actual digital video file to be played on the flash player
3.    The .swf component – the compressed flash file for the website.
4.    ac_runactivecontent.js – the Javascript file that integrates the player into web browsers.

Flash, a non-video-production-based software application created by Adobe can be used make video and graphics for websites.

Adobe Flash player can be used to view Flash Video files on most OS.
